For this week's podcast show we got a chance to speak with Seattle-based musician Norm Chambers, whom records under the name Panabrite, a project we’ve grown quite fond of here on the show over the past year or so. Chambers has had a string of incredible limited run releases on such labels as Tranquility Tapes, Sturmundrugs, Hooker Vision, and Gift Tapes. And he’s now set to release his first LP entitled Soft Terminal on Digitalis in the coming weeks.

Chambers' rhythmically-charged, yet melodically complex work as Panabrite draws from various corners of electronic music’s rich history, tracing back to the early composers of library music, that being the “mood music” or “background music” used in television, film, and commercials, but was never widely available to the general public. Chambers, in fact, has a wealth of knowledge in the area of library music, offering up bits of information and rare recordings through his Lunar Atrium blog.In our conversation with Norm, we discuss his interest in library music and his work as Panabrite. He was also kind enough to put together some of his favorite library music tracks for us to play on this week’s show. We also play a few tracks from some of the recent Panabrite releases, including something off of that new Digitalis LP.

Gift Tapes, along with its sublabel Draft, have been issuing some of the boldest and most forward-thinking experimental electronic and synthesizer-based sounds within the cassette underground over the past few years, having put out releases by such reputable artists as Merzbow, Telecult Powers, Bee Mask, Pulse Emitter, The North Sea, and several others. We recently had a chance to speak with Jason Anderson, who runs both the labels, and who creates some impressive music of his own in the synth duo Brother Raven and in such solo projects as Spare Death Icon, Harpoon Pole Vault, and 2 Hands On Knobs. We air that conversation on this week’s podcast show and play some selections from both the Gift Tapes and Draft catalogs, including a few new and forthcoming tracks.

Now that the body has stabilized after excessive holiday sugar and alcohol consumption, and we can all focus on something other than year-end recaps, it seems like the right time to roll out the first podcast show of 2012. Some great new sounds have arrived in the past few weeks, which already has me excited about what's in store for the year ahead. For starters, this new LP of psychedelic folk weirdness from B. R. Garm titled "The 78th Morning Tide" has been getting some heavy play here in the FFF bunker. Garm (a.k.a. Brendan Evans of the group Visitations) assembled a collection of fuzzed-out, country-fried, idiosyncratic, campfire ditties that are as accessible as they are "outsider"; there's even a head-scratcher of a take on Gordan Lightfoot's classic, "The Wreck of the Edmund Fitzgerald". I can still picture Mr. Reid, my gravel-voiced junior high shop teacher, playing the original and reciting the lyrics to our class as some sort of mini history lesson on iron ore mining in our state. I'm reminded of him, along with the smell of soldering irons and melted plastics, as I listen to Garm's version. It's a new year so, of course, that means we can expect more adventurous new sounds from the always reliable Richard Youngs. His forthcoming album "Amaranthine", that Mie Music will be releasing in the coming weeks, shows him again pushing out into new sonic territory, here composing four lengthier pieces that feature a more prominent percussive feel. The melodic beauty of, say, "Beyond the Valley of Ultrahits" is still intact, but there's a free-wheeling, improvised energy, much like his "Inceptor" release, that send his vocals, electric guitar, synth, and shakuhachi accompaniment off in a fresh direction. Another seeker of new sounds is Ernesto Diaz-Infante. His latest release "Emilio" on Kendra Steiner Editions is a thirty-two minute composition made up of short sound sketches that explore various textures and techniques using the bajo sexto and electronic tanpura and singing bowl. Taken as a whole, it's quite a moving piece of work that, according to the liner notes, is a "yoik" to his late uncle that struggled with mental illness throughout his life. Lastly, I've noticed a lot more song-oriented material creeping into my listening of late, which I'll chalk up to the unseasonably warm conditions we've been experiencing here all winter. But I should mention that the last batch of tapes that Night-People put out in the Fall, which sort of flew under our radar at the time, is filled with some incredible skewed synth and guitar-based pop: the German Army and Hot & Cold tapes are a few favorites at this time. I'll definitely be spinning more from this batch in the weeks ahead. Until then . . .

As mentioned in the previous post, I was considering putting together a sort of Best-of 2011 show for this final podcast of the year. But that was tough to justify given how much excellent new music was sitting next to the stereo that I had yet to play on the show, and I'm guessing that more than a few people out there have reached their threshold for lists and countdowns at this point. Plus, there is plenty of material on this week's show that I would stack right up there amongst the best of the year anyways. For starters, Matt Carlson's Particle Language has to be the finest synth-based record I've heard all year. Carlson had me fumbling for words earlier in the year with his Gecko Dream Levels release on Gift Tapes and on this new LP his singular approach is even more apparent. It's quite refreshing actually to hear someone who is dealing with knobs and patches that has broken free of the Kosmische influence. I'd also add that the recording and mastering of this LP is impeccable - the music just jumps off the vinyl. In terms of song-based albums, I've heard few better than Jakob Olausson's Morning & Sunrise that De Stijl put out a few weeks back. I'll have to say, you can get completely lost in this record and "When Your Bridges Burn", which I opened this week's show with, could very well be my favorite song of the year. Another song from this week's show that I can't listen to enough is "Append and Divide" from Rory Hinchey's Alpha Strategy project. I was sold on this album out of the gates with it's Graham Lambkin-designed cover art, but the music holds up too: vintage synth-pop that isn't the least bit derivative. Finally, I'm still trying to wrap my head around this new Andre Vida collection, Brud: Volumes I-III, out on PAN. There's enough ideas and sounds contained in this set to keep a person busy listening for months on end. I swear I could just play this release on shuffle mode and it would make for one hell of an interesting podcast in its own right. Hmmm . . . . something to consider.

On this week's podcast show, we air our recent phone interview with Boston-based composer and musician, Ricardo Donoso. Having created one of this year's finest albums in Progress Chance, and now set to unleash his next Digitalis-backed release, Spiritual Church Movement, with his experimental electronic duo Perispirit in the coming month, we were happy to get a chance to ask Ricardo some questions about his music and Semata Productions, the micro-label he has been running since 2008. It has been a few months since we put together a straight-forward, non-feature-formatted show and, in that time, heaps of incredible music has been piling up all over the damn place: around the stereo in the basement, on top of the boombox by the kitchen sink, all over the bookshelves in the living room, and in various e-mail inboxes. So, with a nice long holiday break just around the corner, it felt like the right time to sift through all of this and offer up some of our current favorites for this week's show. My hope is that this will make for ideal listening when you're sitting there in your post-dinner, tryptophan-daze sipping your sixth glass of wine (or bourbon). At this point, I'm thinking Bailey's & Coffee as I look out this window at the first snowfall of the year.

As for highlights this week, I'd like to simply say that all the selections fit that category and leave it at that, but I won't cop out that easily since its been awhile. For starters, Soft Abuse just dropped two stellar new releases from Pigeons and Ulaan Khol. Fans of Pigeons' previous work may be somewhat surprised by the slightly more abrasive, avant-pop direction the duo takes on They Sweethearstammers; however, Wednesday Knudsen's consistently dreamy vocals still provide an element of smoothness and sensuality to this collection of songs. Ulaan Khol (a.k.a. Steven R. Smith) follows up his excellent Ceremony trilogy with another scorcher of a release. Though La Catacomb doesn't feature the full-blown lift-off that the final installment from that trilogy did, Smith continues to make his guitar speak in new and interesting ways that is both melodically and emotionally charged. Sacred Phrases most recent batch of tapes has also been getting heavy play around here. Included in this lot is more (to-be-expected) awesomeness from M. Geddes Gengras and Hobo Cubes, but I actually keep coming back to this (new-to-me) Spirit Catepetl release, which features some great zoned-out, late night transmissions. Lee Noble and Quiet Evenings both continue their winning ways on their (sort of) latest full-length offerings, delivering what I'd say is their strongest material to date. Noble's Horrorism has been glued to the turntable for weeks now and is making its case to be positioned at the top of my year-end list. That being said, these new records from Decimus are perhaps my favorite to have arrived in the past few months. Decimus is the solo guitar/electronics project of Pat Murano, an artist who also puts in time in such groups as No Neck Blues Band, Key of Shame, and Malkuth.With Decimus, Murano is working at this fascinating intersection between noise, industrial, drone, and electronic music and, like NNCK, he clearly understands the role of pacing and dynamics in all of these side-long pieces he offers up. There are five of these Decimus releases currently floating around and, reportedly, there are seven more in the works. Finally, I also spun a track from Ricardo Donoso's amazing new album, Progress Chance. We have plans to chat with Ricardo about his music and his label, Semata Productions, here on the show in the coming weeks, so definitely check back.

We recently had a chance to speak with Eli Keszler about his various musical and artistic pursuits, including the work he is doing with his REL imprint. We aired this interview on this week’s show and played several tracks from Keszler’s solo and collaborative projects, along with something from his partner and collaborator, Ashley Paul.

*Eli Keszler is a composer, artist and multi-instrumentalist based in New York City. In performance, he often plays drums, bowed crotales and guitar in conjunction with his installations. In his ensemble compositions, he uses extended strings, motors, crotales, horns and mechanical devices to create his sound, balancing intense harmonic formations with acoustic sustain, fast jarring rhythm, mechanical propulsion, dense textures and detailed visual presentations. Eli has toured extensively throughout Europe and the US, performing solo and in collaboration with artists such as Phill Niblock, Aki Onda, Joe McPhee, Loren Connors, Jandek, Roscoe Mitchell, Anthony Coleman, Joe Morris, Steve Beresford, C Spencer Yeh, Greg Kelley (Nmperign), T Model Ford, Ran Blake, Ashley Paul and Steve Pyne. He has recorded solo releases for labels such as his own REL Records, ESP-DISK' and Type (Red Horse). His installations have appeared at the Boston Center for the Arts and Nuit Blanche NYC and the Shreveport MSPC New Music Festival. He has most recently won the Mata composers competition for the 2012 season. Eli Keszler is a graduate of the New England Conservatory in Boston where he studied with Anthony Coleman and Ran Blake. For me, Stunned Records was truly one of the main inspirations for starting up the Free Form Freakout webcasts. I was consistently moved by the wide-ranging sounds that they were putting out and was, quite simply, just looking for an outlet to maybe let a few other people hear about some of this incredible music that I was getting ahold of. Not only was the first track that I ever played on these shows a Stunned release, a Warm Climate track to be exact, but the first interview feature show was done with Phil French from Stunned. And over the past year, I’ve continued to spotlight at least some of the tapes that came out with each new batch they released.

As Stunned has now officially come to a close, I felt compelled to do something a bit special for this week’s show. So, in addition to playing a bunch of tracks from the Stunned catalog, including several selections from the final batch of tapes, I called on some Stunned alumni to provide some comments on what the label meant to them and their work, which you’ll hear spread throughout the show.

It certainly was no easy task trying to put together a playlist that I felt was fairly representative of the label as a whole and there are, admittedly, some glaring omissions, but I sincerely hope that you enjoy what I've put together here. I do want to extend a big thank you to Phil & Myste and to all the other artists that took the time to lend their voice to this show. We recently had a chance to speak with Michael Jantz who runs the Avant Archive label out in Milwaukee, Wisconsin. Over the past year, Jantz has honed a very distinctive and instantly recognizable visual aesthetic for the label, while building up a catalog with an impressive range of sounds. In addition to his work with Avant Archive, Jantz has also been an active player within underground tape trader circles for several years now, having put out numerous releases of his own as Black Eagle Child on such reputable labels as Stunned, Digitalis, Housecraft, and many others. We aired our recent phone conversation with Michael on this week's show, where we discussed his work with both Avant Archive and as Black Eagle Child, and we played several tracks from each respective discography.

First, I'd like to begin by acknowledging the passing of Conrad Schnitzler this past week. While I'll openly admit to only scratching the surface of his vast discography, it goes without saying that his seminal work in Kluster and Tangerine Dream, along with his numerous solo and collaborative efforts, casts a fairly sizable shadow over several generations worth of experimental music, including the current wave of post-Noise/neo-Kosmische artists. Plenty has already been written else where about Schnitzler, so I'll simply conclude with a statement he made about his work in a David Keenan-penned feature in The Wire from 2006 (which the above photo is taken from): "It is pure sound that I make. And I'm not expressing myself in any way when I'm making it. If anything, I express myself more when I listen back to it, when I go upstairs and listen to it and have one hour of joy." Thankfully, Schnitzler left us with countless hours of joy to experience for ourselves.

Some highlights from this week's show include another brilliant track from Panabrite. Norm Chambers continues his winning streak of upward bound synth explorations on Omni Center, his recent release on Sturmundrugs, finding new and inventive ways to meld his electronic and organic sound creations. Goaty Tapes and Cabin Floor Esoterica also just dropped some impressive new sounds in their latest tape batches. Amongst the Goaty heap, the Banana Head / Phantom Payn split has been getting repeated spins here in the FFF bunker. I was a little surprised to see this pairing at first, but it makes perfect sense really. The Phantom Payn material, which was recorded around the same time in the mid-Nineties as the excellent Days/Daze release that De Stijl put out last year, fits quite nicely alongside the contemporary loner psych pop moves of Banana Head. I'm quite pleased, in fact, that Goaty had the foresight to present the Phantom Payn's work within the current DIY underground context where it rightly belongs. Along with being some of the most visually stunning tapes I've seen of late, the recent Cabin Floor Esoterica batch also delivers the goods musically. The otherworldly wandering blues of Keijo's Along the Stream hits just the right Jandekian sweet spot for me, albeit in a more tuneful way, and Serfs' blown-out guitar playing on Sha La La-La Later On is rather beautiful, turning a Curtis Mayfield cover into something totally new and original. But, since I've mentioned originality, I must bring up the latest Super Minerals tape as well. The duo of Phil French and William Giacchi continue to make some of the most mind-bendingly original sounds around and with The Hoax, and now Contacteer, they've released two of my favorite albums of the year thus far. Lastly, we spun the brand new Horse Marriage single, which marks Avant Archive's first foray into releasing vinyl. In the coming weeks, we will be joined by Avant Archive owner/operator, Michael Jantz, where we will be discussing the label and his own musical endeavors as Black Eagle Child. Do check back.

Each mixtape in this first edition comes with artwork and inserts lifted from various turn-of-the-century nature publications (Where were you in 1902?) and feature slightly different tracklists on c60-c90 length tapes.

We recently came across Russell Hoke's records while flipping through the tastefully stocked bins of Dusty Groove America on a recent trip to Chicago. Tucked in their small "Folk & Country" section sat these fascinating looking hand-assembled and hand-scrawled record jackets, with titles like Haunted Brain and If I Had Been the Universe, that looked positively out of place among the more recognizable selections of the genre. With absolutely no knowledge of what any of these would sound like, we took a chance and laid down the coin on Hoke's He Would Have Been A Fine Young Man record. And what an amazing record it is!! The album is a haunting work of psych-tinged folk and bluegrass that sounds like some lost late-sixties/early-seventies gem, adding a bit of intrigue and confusion to the 2011 copyright date.

After tracking down more of Hoke's records in the ensuing month, though, it became apparent that much of his material was actually recorded throughout the 80's and 90's, but is only now, in recent years, being released in small quantities by Hoke himself. His work brings to mind various left-of-center songsmiths such as Michael Hurley, Holy Modal Rounders, Lee Hazlewood, Syd Barrett, Daniel Johnston, and we'll even go out on a limb and say Neutral Milk Hotel. It's outsider music indeed, but not in the overly oddball fashion that this tag typically connotes. We were fortunate enough to get a chance to chat with Russell recently over the phone and ask him some questions about his music and his string of new releases. We aired that conversation on this week's show, along with various song selections from his catalog.

I was a little concerned with how this week's webcast was going to pan out after having this new Gal Bara/Ugly Husbands split tape get chowed in the opening minutes and having to start from scratch. I believe it was Live After Death back in junior high when that last occurred, but I can assure you that the Gal Bara track that I was going to play is a keeper. Anything Warm Climate-related you know is going to be fascinating to say the least. Some highlights from this week's show that we were actually able to play would have to include a track from Circuit des Yeux's (a.k.a. Haley Fohr) Portrait, her third full-length offering for De Stijl. I find myself coming back to this album again-and-again. It's sort of fitting that there is a nod to Mr. Pink Reason on the back jacket as this carries some of the same bleak beauty and intensity as his seminal Cleansing the Mirror did a few years back. Fohr's sound underwent some 'cleansing' of its own on this album, but this only spotlights what a truly gifted songwriter she really is. We also just got in a healthy serving from the latest Night People tape batch. While there is plenty from this to play and discuss, two of the standout releases for me thus far have been the ones from Three Legged Race and Cellophane Spill. Amongst the deluge of synth-based music, Robert Beatty's Three Legged Race project offers a refreshing take on the form, weaving together a wide array of ever-evolving sounds. Cellophane Spill, who reportedly have ties to Austin's Low Red Center, are working in a somewhat comparable minimal wave/early industrial vein as that group, but with the sort of spirit for experimentation that units like the Storm Bugs embraced. We also played a track from one of our local favs, Brute Heart, off their recent Lonely Hunter release on Soft Abuse. And speaking of Soft Abuse, Chris Berry from the label will be joining us in the studio again in the coming weeks to spin some records and let us know what's in store for the label. What he actually plans to play is still a mystery to me, but there have been whispers of new Pumice, so if that means anything to you, then you might want to check back.

Several great national tours converge next week in Minneapolis and Free Form Freakout is psyched to take it all in. To start off this week's webcast we played tracks from Food Pyramid, Radio People, and KWJAZ who will be playing together on the same bill at Nick & Eddie Warehouse on July 5th, along with Swanox and Garrincha & The Stolen Elk (discussed on our previous Weird Forest feature). Earlier in the evening, Sudden Oak, Palmetto Moon Electronic Group, John Neikrasz, and local duo Glitter Pig will be kicking things off at Madame of the Arts. There looks to be plenty of fireworks in store for this evening, so locals no need to worry if your 4th of July plans don't pan out . . . you're covered.

Other highlights on this week's webcast include The World of Echo CD-R from Eric Hardiman's Rambutan project that just came out on his own Tape Drift imprint. On this hour-long trip, Hardiman lays out his broadest, boldest, and brightest sound creations to date, staring down his guitar-based urges with mutant technoid vision. The album combines a few previously (Hobo Cult) released tracks along with a smattering of material, both new and old, to form a rather cohesive whole, and providing a major teaser for his reported forthcoming debut full-length on Weird Forest. Leave it to the Italians to take a fringe horror sub-genre as their band name, right? The first offering from Cannibal Movie, also the first release from Sound of Cobra Records, is an absolute beast of an album though. Total hypno-tribal sounds from this organ and drums duo that are able to work in some melodic swing with their raw primitive thud. Curiously, Donato Epiro has not been heard from since the formation of this group. Hmmm, just a clever band name you say? Lastly, we just received a stack of tapes from the latest batch from Stunned, which we could have filled up plenty of this week's show with, but we're going to hold back some for the weeks ahead. We had to, however, play a lengthy slab from the debut of Voder Deth Squad, a real-time collaboration between M. Geddes Gengras and Jeremy Kelly on Moog and modular synthesizer. The album features no overdubs or edits, yet displays an energy and exactness that only a couple of seasoned players like these two could pull off. As far as music to get totally lost in goes, this is some pretty choice stuff.

We recently had a chance to speak with Davy Bui who runs the Weird Forest label out in Sacramento, CA. We discuss some of the label's history, some goings-on within the cassette underground, some upcoming releases that the label has in the works, and even, yes, the Based God himself, Lil B. We also discuss Davy's own shapeshifting Garrincha & The Stolen Elk project, which Weird Forest will be releasing a new album from in the next week. In addition to airing this conversation, we played various selections from the Weird Forest catalog, including a track from the latest Noveller album and one from that forthcoming Garrincha & The Stolen Elk album. It's starting to actually feel like summer around these parts, which I'm sure all would agree is a welcome change. So with my Summer Ale in hand, I'll try to remain focused here long enough to highlight some of the great releases we've acquired in recent weeks. Two current favorites come to us from the Lighten Up Sounds label, which is based down the road in Lake City, MN. Not only is this a scenic little river town, but it also holds the distinction of being the birthplace of waterskiing. Dammit, I'm already trailing off. . . Anyways, I was completely floored by John Zuma St. Pelvyn's Ampex, Stolanoff, Dogwood, Rain tape that Lighten Up Sounds put out. Didn't realize I needed a dimebag of wood shavings, but sure enough there it was tucked into the cool oversized packaging that this tape comes housed in. The music was apparently recorded while the artist was living in a water tower out in northern California and there is definitely a loner or, better yet, meditative feel to these recordings. Z-St. P's guitar playing brings to mind Loren Connors in the way that he wanders and bends around blues motifs, but his use of the theremin sends things squealing off into a completely different direction on the second side. Lighted's brand new Queendom cassette has also been glued to the tape deck since catching their performance at Heliotrope last week. Lighted are a trio that play on the heavy liquified psych groove sound, but with a little more backbone than many of their contemporaries, which to these ears sounds quite refreshing actually. Hot on the heels of his great Lion of Judah single, Moon Glyph delivers Dylan Ettinger's latest offering in Pattern Recursion, which I'm willing to bet won't make it into the Dub review section in Wire this time around. Pattern Recursion is a different beast altogether; a type of analog machine music that still retains a sense of warmth and melody, while highlighting Ettinger's knack for concocting little song-like phrases within these lengthier, sidelong peices. Speaking of lengthy, The Preterite just released a sprawling double cassette on Weird Forest that features some incredible blurred-out piano and tape constructions that make for a totally immersive listen. Be on the lookout for a full Weird Forest show in the coming weeks, after we make our trek down to Chicago to take in some Acid Marshmallow. Cheers!

Heliotrope is an annual 3-day music festival, now in its 8th year, that brings together a wide range of artists from the Twin Cities' vibrant underground music scene. We played several selections from some of the artists performing at this year’s festival. We also had the chance to chat with Erik Wivinus, one of the curators of Heliotrope and a member of the group Thunderbolt Pagoda, who will be performing as well. This week's highlights include some interesting fragmentary pop, the first of which comes from a brand new release out on Stunned by the Philadelphia-based group, Remote Islands. Days of Heaven features a veritable busload of musicians (and instruments) under the direction of group mastermind, Colin Pate. Pate and company weave together an impressive collection of widely varied songs that I'm suspecting will find a much larger audience, as it bloody well should. Son of Salami is also creating some engaging pop songs, albeit of a far more demented and tongue-in-cheek variety. Son of Salami (a.k.a. Joey Pizza Slice) uses 'eraser headless tape recording' methods and pens songs with titles such as "My Penis is a Fortune Teller" and "I Got Lost On A Acid Trip", which, let's face it, could all get a little grating on the nerves if not for the simple fact that there are some incredibly catchy tunes spread across this record. If there's a shortage of portable cassette players in Vermont, though, you now know who to blame.

We also played a track from Hobo Cubes from this exquisite Inscriptions Vol. 1 double cassette compilation that Sacred Phases recently put out. Hobo Cubes is currently on the road with Femminielli and Das Amore w/ JLK, making their way through our area this week as part of the Hobo Cult Records/Los Discos Enfantasmes May tour. Check'em out if you can. Another double cassette release of gorgeous, bittersweet sounds comes to us from Ous Mal, a Finnish duo that crafts melody-rich ambient soundscapes that are far more involved than that description implies. And one final release I have to mention is the Pacific Support benefit compilation that Draft recently put out. By buying this release, not only does all of your money go towards the relief/recovery efforts in Japan, but you also get an impeccable collection of some of the most forward-thinking synth/electronics artists operating today: Rene Hell, Matt Carlson, The North Sea, Keith Fullerton Whitman, Panabrite, etc., etc. It's a win/win situation, so get in the game while there are still copies available.

This week's highlights include a couple of the new releases from the excellent NNA Tapes imprint. In terms of chopped-up, outer realm synthetic sounds, the new ones from the mysterious Wanda Group and Derek Gedalecia's Head Boogle project sit right up there with the recent batch from Gift Tapes that I've yapped-up in previous weeks. Wanda Group play 'instruments' a bit like Smegma do, meaning who the hell really knows what's going on. Plus, their Bass Urine treatments rachet up the level of abstraction even further. Head Boggle, one of the more fitting aliases in recent memory, dabble in somewhat similar liquefied sonics that dart every which way. Over the chaotic sprawl of the Domo Live side, however, you realize that Gedalecia indeed has a steady and assured hand on the tiller. Another album that recently caught me off guard was Kerning, a very limited run first full-length offering from C. Yantis out on Blackest Rainbow. Yantis, at times, wields his guitar much in the same way that the guys in Barn Owl do, exploring a sweeping, Americana-infused take on minimalism, albeit at a slightly lower decibel level. That said, he seems just as intent to detonate the whole Folk/Blues tradition ala Bill Orcutt's recent solo outings too. We'll have to see how this plays out on Yantis's forthcoming release on Hobo Cult Records due out this summer. Speaking of Hobo Cult Records, this past week saw the release of an excellent Hobo Cult compilation put out by the Beko Digital Singles Label. I usually don't play many mp3s on the show, but I couldn't help myself with this one. Hell, I was tempted to play the whole shebang, but that seemed a bit much when you can grab a copy for yourself here. We closed out this week's show with just a taster of Nathan Mclaughlin's fantastic new Echolocation #5 cassette. You'll get a chance to hear more though in the coming weeks, as Nathan will be joining us for an in-studio session.

Some more new sounds arrived over the past few weeks at the nearly flooded FFF bunker. It was looking like we might have to box up the whole works and head for high ground, but fortunately Mother Nature cooperated with us. So now we just have to deal with that pervasive damp sock and litter box odor, but at least the music collection is safe, right? Some highlights on this week's show include the new cassette from Garrincha & The Stolen Elk from the latest Stunned batch. G&TSE are the Sacramento-based duo of Matt Kretzmann and Davy Bui, Bui being the fellow behind the great Weird Forest label. Joined on this release by Karlos Ayala (bass) and Kevin Corcoran (drums), G&TSE play a refreshing form of explosive, yet intricate, skronk ROCK that has nothing to do with the underground's current fixation with all things Kraut/shoegaze/Spacemen 3/____-wave. Based on this c20, their forthcoming LP on Weird Forest should definitely be something to be on the lookout for. Another release that breaks free from much of the current synth herd is the new cassette from Matt Carlson called Gecko Dream Levels. With rather glossy fidelity, Carlson's whacked-out synth & electronics sounds dart in myriad directions, causing me to duck for cover in the studio. Lastly, more choice DIY sounds to emerge from Down Under with the new Certain Materials EP from Primitive Motion, the duo of Deadnotes' members Leighton Craig and Sandra Selig. Their brand of homespun, primitive pop sits quite comfortably amongst such notable contemporaries as Peaking Lights and Naked on the Vague. It's ace!, mate.

It's been close to two months since we've done just a straight-ahead webcast show and in that time some great releases, both new and old, have arrived. Among the highlights this week is the new double album from Keiji Haino, Jim O'Rourke, and Oren Ambarchi entitled In A Flash Everything Comes Together As One There Is No Need For A Subject. This release features the trio's full performance that went down at SuperDeluxe in Tokyo on January 24th, 2010. I'm generally not all that fond of live albums, but this performance, and recording of it, is absolutely stellar. Over the four sides, this trio of veteran improvisors explore a wide range of sounds that, at times, recalls the intensity and dynamics of Haino's work in Fushitsusha. The gatefold jacket artwork and live photos that house these records are equally impressive I might add. Another unexpected treat is the new 7" single from C. Spencer Yeh, or C. S. Yeh in this case, out on De Stijl. Perhaps best known for his work in Burning Star Core, and certainly no slouch of an improvisor himself, Yeh has now gone and written some pop songs. Damn good ones too!! My only hope is that this is just a teaser for more to come and not just a one-stop layover. Finally, Gift Tapes recently released three new cassettes. Amongst this batch was a new one from Spare Death Icon, a creeper synth project helmed by Gift Tapes proprietor, and Brother Raven member, Jason E. Anderson. I've yet to hear someone approach the whole John Carpenter soundtrack vibe as good as this. It definitely contains some paranoia and dread inducing sounds. I swear I was anticipating my own blood splatter in the dishwater while listening to this the other night. Quality stuff!!

We discuss how Night-People has evolved over the years, the distinctive silkscreen artwork that he creates, and some of the other projects he has in the works. We also talk about recent developments with Wet Hair and the new album they just recorded called In Vogue Spirit, which is slated for release on the De Stijl label later this spring. In addition to airing this conversation, we play some cassette and vinyl selections from the Night-People catalog, including a few forthcoming tracks that Shawn had provided for us. We also spin the excellent opening track from that new Wet Hair album.

We recently had a chance to speak with Graham Lambkin, who was a member of The Shadow Ring, one of the most unique groups to emerge from the 90’s underground, who released albums on such reputable labels as Siltbreeze, Swill Radio, and Corpus Hermeticum. Since The Shadow Ring disbanded in 2003, Lambkin has continued to release a number of fascinating works both on his own and with sound artist Jason Lescalleet. He has issued some of these albums on his own KYE label, which he revived in 2007 with his Salmon Run release and has since begun to put out other like-minded artists’ work as well.

We aired that phone conversation with Graham on this week’s show and played some selections from The Shadow Ring, Graham’s solo and duo outings, and other artists from the KYE catalog. Graham also generously provided us with a few rarities and forthcoming tracks.

This week we celebrated our 5th year of doing Free Form Freakout. What have we learned over those years you ask? Very little, in fact, other than each week still feels like a new adventure and we still enjoy getting together to play music for each other and for those that tune in. For this show, we thought it would be fitting to play a bunch of music from Captain Beefheart, an artist that has been a part of our conversations over the years, not only as a way to mark this occasion, but to celebrate his life and music in light of his recent passing. We were experiencing some technical issues while recording this week's show, so things sound a bit more slurred and blurred than usual. Please pardon the post-dentist-visit-quality of the talk breaks if you will.

Coincidentally, the music selections seemed to fit in fairly well with the unexpected AM sound. Some highlights on this week's show included a track from Death Light's excellent six-song cassette, In The Chambers, which takes a vaguely Residents-like skewed pop sensibility and covers it in an appealing analog haze. There are still copies of this available from Goaty Tapes and a release on Reverb Worship is forthcoming. Open-door, Murfreesburo free rock collective, Horsehair Everywhere, recently dropped a full-length of loud and loose No Neck-style improv on La Station Radar. It's a far cry from Horsehair's, and FFF favorites, Frank Baugh (Sparkling Wide Pressure) and Lee Noble's (LEE NOBLE) solo work, but certainly no less engaging. Eggy Records from Portland just reissued two previously released EPs from the underrated Ghost to Falco on a single cassette. Unlike Ghost to Falco's Exotic Believers album from last year that featured a cast of thirty-plus contributors, this release find GoF's mainman Eric Crespo in a comparatively freewheelin', loner songwriter mode. Things veered towards the lengthy and hallucinatory in the second half of the show with Royallen's contribution from the amazing Good Wheel Tea Carpentry cassette boxset on Housecraft and the shorter, yet equally mind-erasing, part two of Angus MacLise's "Dreamweapon Benefit for Oklahoma City Police Dept", which also features the likes of Tony Conrad and Henry Flynt.

The new year starts off with a bang with a couple of great tape batches from two of our favorite labels: Digitalis and Stunned. Plucked a few favorites from the stack to play on this week's webcast, among them this incredibly massive single cassette reissue of Panabrite's first two full-lengths Nordsee & Contemplating the Observatory. Panabrite is another synth project helmed by a guy named Norm Chambers out of Seattle. I say "another" in this case because there has certainly been no shortage of synthesizer-based music coming out over the past few years, but Panabrite offers a fairly unique take on things, injecting bits of acoustic instrumentation into his bright and bubbly song-like concoctions. Super Minerals, the duo of Phil French and William Giacchi, step into a whole new dimension on The Hoax, a total trip of an album that at times rivals the sort of oddly rhythmic, multi-layered alien sound scrabble heard on Xiphiidae's recent Pisces Muse tape. If you've been blown away by Bill Orcutt's recent acoustic guitar detonations, you might want to check out his electrified counterpart in Rogue Cop, not that there's really any parallels between their sound or style in any way, shape, or form, both just totally re-imagining the possibilities of the guitar in general. Had to bust out some of the old Portland weirdness with The Parasites of the Western World and Smegma too.

Spun the first vinyl offerings from Eric Hardiman's consistently great Tape Drift label. The first was a limited 7" lathe from his own Rambutan project which Byron Coley recently covered in his "Size Matters" column in The Wire (#321) stating:

"Erasing the Past . . . mixes stillness and clatter in equal measures. On the A side, a small drone figure repeats while everything else crumbles slowly onto your shoulders, making an embarrassingly big pile of mock-dandruff. On the flip, Hardiman goes for a steampunk drone that really clanks the old iron, as they say."

The second is a split 12" with his duo Century Plants and the mighty Locrian from Chicago, who have been on an absolute tear this year. Check out the Small Doses website for more on their output and activity.

Broke out some things from a new stash that arrived from the very fine Eggy Tapes and Mailorder out of Portland. The Woolen Men cassette contains some highly addictive scruffy pop gems and, while I've just about reached my threshold level for extended synth jammers, this Polyps tape offers a rather refreshing take on the whole synth/electronics bit. Also, dug into the excellent 3" CD box set that Peasant Magik released awhile back to mark their 100th release. Peasant Magik have a massive batch of new tapes ready for order, which you can sample some of the sounds over at their website.
